V: The Pilot

Let me preface this review by saying that I have never seen the old V series, but I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot of the new series. It mixed scifi, espionage, romance, drama, and black comedy for a promising start to the series. The show will center on an FBI agent who is suspicious of the Visitors (the aliens that the show is named after) and her son who is all for the new residents of Earth. This family drama grounds the series firmly in the realm of reality, while still allowing the good guys to duke it out with the bad guys.
Since this show is so new, I don’t want to ruin any plot points and this will be a short, sweet review completely free of spoilers. The pilot has a few Firefly alums (Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk ftw!) with Elizabeth Mitchell of Lost who all give this scifi show some credibility and genuine acting talent. Morena Baccarin, the leader of the Visitors, is icy and clam in the best possibly ways for her role while Elizabeth Mitchell is no nonsense as the FBI agent.
I really look forward to watching this series progress as it has so much potential, but I also worry for it because ABC doesn’t seem to have too much confidence in it by the time slot they put it in and the way they scheduled it (only a few episodes before the holiday season, a death wish for most new series). I think V has the possibility of a strong future if they stick to action with swiftly paced plotting like the pilot.
